多倫多一劇場2025年度回歸文本，再一次舉辦劇本研讀及演讀計劃。籍著研讀劇本來提升學員閱讀劇本能力和欣賞不同劇作品

 

人為了生活、為下一代、為種種原因而不斷流徙。去與留、散與聚，何去何從?

 

「流徙之女」故事改編自英國餐館Sweet Mandarin老闆Helen Tse的回憶錄，講述主角家族由廣州、香港和英國三地之間的流徙故事。Helen是謝家現居英國的第四代後人，上世紀初她的太公為生活從廣州南來香港開醬油廠，可惜家道中落，太公的女兒（即Helen外婆）在香港為英國人家庭當傭工，順勢跟老闆去英國，誰知自此長居異地。Helen自小在英國長大，一直不喜歡華人身份，一次與外婆回鄉探親，聽到上一代人的流徙歷程，打動她毅然放棄執業律師資格，拿起鑊鏟繼承祖業，鑽研祖傳珍味，與姐妹開設餐館，卻從而掀起兩代人間的新一頁。

DramaoneToronto’s 2025 “Back to the Text” program proudly returns, offering script study and staged reading sessions. Through in-depth exploration of dramatic texts, participants enhance their understanding of playwriting and deepen their appreciation for theatre.

This year’s featured work is Sweet Mandarin, adapted from the memoir of Helen Tse, owner of the renowned UK restaurant Sweet Mandarin. The story spans generations and continents — from Guangzhou to Hong Kong to the UK — tracing the migration and resilience of a Chinese family.

Helen’s great-grandfather left Guangzhou in the early 20th century to start a soy sauce factory in Hong Kong. After the family business declined, her grandmother worked as a maid for a British family and eventually followed them to England, where she settled permanently. Raised in the UK, Helen initially rejected her Chinese identity. But on a trip to China with her grandmother, she was deeply moved by her family’s journey. Inspired, she gave up her law career, picked up the wok, and carried on the family’s culinary legacy by opening a restaurant with her sisters — sparking a new chapter between generations.
